We just got a dementia diagnosis

What to do in the first month, and what can wait longer than you think.

Quick answer

What to do in the first month, and what can wait longer than you think.

HomeBy SituationWe just got a dementia diagnosis

The first month after a diagnosis is mostly about slowing down. Very little has to be decided immediately, and some of what feels urgent is better decided in three months.

Short answer

What to do in the first month, and what can wait longer than you think.

What to do, in order

  1. Slow down. Very little has to be decided this month. Families who make housing decisions in the first weeks frequently make them twice.
  2. Get the specific diagnosis. Alzheimer's, vascular dementia, Lewy body and frontotemporal dementia progress differently and respond differently to medication. Lewy body in particular carries serious sensitivity to certain antipsychotics, which matters enormously for care planning.
  3. Do the legal work now, while capacity is clear. Power of attorney, medical power of attorney, directives. This window closes, and closing it turns straightforward decisions into court proceedings.
  4. Call AGE of Central Texas. 512-451-4611. The free early-stage memory loss program and CaregiverU courses exist precisely for this month, and most Austin families never hear about them.
  5. Understand what memory care will require later. In Texas it means an Alzheimer's certification on a Type B licence. Knowing that now saves you touring places that cannot legally take your parent later.

Questions Austin families ask

Who do I call first when a parent in Austin suddenly needs care?

Start with the Aging and Disability Resource Center of the Capital Area at 855-937-2372, weekdays 8 to 5. It's the front door for Texas long-term services and supports across Travis, Williamson, Hays, and seven other counties. Appointments are strongly suggested. You can also dial 2-1-1.

How do I get Meals on Wheels in Austin?

Call Meals on Wheels Central Texas at 512-477-2273, weekdays 8 to 5. Eligibility requires being primarily homebound, unable to easily prepare nutritious meals, without consistent daytime help, and able to accept delivery in the Greater Austin area. Enrollment includes case management. Rural counties are served separately.

What free transportation is available for Austin seniors?

Several options. Senior Access, formerly Drive a Senior, provides free volunteer-driver rides. The City of Austin Parks and Recreation Senior Transportation Program serves residents 60 and older inside city limits. CapMetro Access offers ADA paratransit, and CapMetro gives a half-price Reduced Fare ID at 65.
