Assisted Living in the Austin area

Assisted living is for someone who is largely independent but needs a reliable hand with the everyday things — bathing, dressing, medications, meals, getting to appointments. In Texas it is a licensed residential setting, not a medical one. Staff are caregivers and med aides, not nurses on every shift.

Three things worth knowing first

• Ask which license the community holds. Type A cannot keep a resident who needs staff help to evacuate or needs attendance overnight.
• Get the care-level assessment in writing. Base rent is rarely the real number; care levels can add several hundred to well over a thousand dollars a month.
• Ask what happens when private funds run out. Many Austin-area communities do not contract with Medicaid managed care at all.
